Foxes defeat Falcons

The county rivalry game between the Hartsville Red Foxes and the Darlington Falcons turned into a complete mismatch as the Foxes won 35-3. The win runs the Foxes record to 9-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the region. By virtue of winning the region, Hartsville will open the playoffs at home next Friday against Orangeburg-Wilkinson.

The game got off to a very sloppy start with the Foxes losing a fumble on the first play. The Falcons then fumbled it back to the Foxes. After another fumble, the Falcons drove to the Foxes’ 3 yard line, kicking a 20 yard field goal that gave Darlington a 3-0 lead with 1:40 left in the first quarter.

The Foxes started a drive on their 35 yard line and Donovan Lambert ran 58 yards on second down to reach the 5 yard line. Lambert then ran the 5 yards for a TD and put the Foxes on the board. Caleb Caldwell’s PAT made the score 7-3 with 1:15 left in the quarter. As the quarter ended, the Falcons were forced to punt, giving the Foxes the ball on the 49 yard line.

The second quarter would prove to be a Red Fox offensive explosion as they would score 28 points in quick fashion. The first touchdown came after the Foxes moved the ball to the 11 yard line and Tiyon Evans ran it in. Caldwell added the PAT and Hartsville led 14-3. The Falcons’ next possession ended quickly as Hunter Weeks returned a fumble down to the 25 yard line.

After reaching the 1 yard line, A.J. Joyner ran it in, and once again Caldwell converted the PAT making it 21-3 with 4:50 left before halftime. The dominating Fox defense got the ball back to offense with a 4th down stop at midfield. Collins Bishop got into the scoring column with a 43 yard scamper into the endzone. Caldwell converted the extra point, making it 28-3.

After forcing another punt gave the Foxes the ball on the Darlington 39 yard line. On the first play A.J. Joyner hit J.D. Pendergrass with a pass down to the 3 yard line. Joyner then ran it in and Caldwell completed his perfect night with the PAT’s making the score 35-3 at the half.

The rest of the game was played with a running clock and Hartsville played backups on offense the entire second half as the coaching staff began thinking about the playoffs next week. There was no scoring during the second half, leaving the score at 35-3. The Red Fox defense had another dominating effort as they held their opponents under 100 yards of offense for the second consecutive week. The Bizzell’s Offensive Player of the Game was Donovan Lambert with six carries for 95 yards and a TD.

The Bizzell’s Defensive Player of the Game was Hunter Weeks whose fumble recovery and return sparked the Red Foxes explosion in the second quarter. As mentioned, the Foxes will play the Orangeburg-Wilkinson Bruins next Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Kelleytown Stadium. Go out and support the Red Foxes.
