Officials previously issued a warning of possible wildfires amidst the heatwave, with the National Weather Service urging residents to prepare as it could be the hottest in the year. They were already worried knowing the placement of the state makes it a heat dome.

The three wildfires, named Reche, Highland, and Rabbit respectively, were all found in rural areas and within 40 miles (65 km) of each other last Friday. The latter proved itself to be the most destructive and difficult to contain as it is currently only at 5%, while the others were able to be properly contained.

California Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot said that Summer saw an increase of wildfires in the state, vegetation starting to dry and wither. Newman adds that the heat poses a concern for the state.

The National Weather Service notes this is the beginning of an intense period for the state amidst the heatwave. Just a few hours later, a new wildfire, dubbed the “Gavilan Fire” emerged, leading people to evacuate to Martin Luther King High School.

This incident is just one of the examples that shows the effects of the extreme weather, specifically the heatwave. Many have been advising residents to care for themselves by wearing appropriate clothing and observing weather updates and alerts.
