In a heart-wrenching courtroom scene, Elizabeth Archibeque, a 29-year-old Arizona woman, received a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the murder of her 6-year-old son, Deshaun Martinez.
The tragic case unfolded as witnesses recounted the harrowing conditions in which Deshaun and his young brother were kept before his life was tragically cut short.
The sentencing took place in Coconino Superior Court, where Archibeque’s lawyer sought the inclusion of parole eligibility after 35 years. However, Judge Ted Reed ultimately ruled against it, citing her “heinous, cruel and depraved behavior” as justification for lifelong imprisonment.
The 2020 death of Deshaun Martinez was marked by severe starvation, as revealed in an autopsy report that showed the boy weighed a mere 18 pounds at the time of his passing. Authorities discovered Deshaun unresponsive in the family’s Flagstaff apartment after a distress call from his grandmother, Ann Martinez.
Despite efforts to save him, his death was later determined to be a homicide caused by severe starvation.During the court proceedings, Archibeque took the witness stand, expressing profound remorse for her actions and taking full responsibility for her son’s death.

A Tragic Tale of Abuse and Neglect
Archibeque was not alone in facing charges related to Deshaun’s death. The boy’s father, Anthony Martinez, and grandmother, Ann Martinez, are also defendants in the case, both pleading not guilty to murder and child abuse charges. Their trials are scheduled separately, with Ann Martinez’s trial set for January 2024.
According to police testimony, Deshaun and his older brother endured unimaginable living conditions, spending up to 16 hours a day confined to a small closet with an orange piece of plastic on the floor. Authorities described the closet as reeking of urine and inhumane. Deshaun’s brother survived the ordeal but exhibited severe malnourishment and emaciation.
Archibeque’s public defender, Christine Brown, argued that her client had a traumatic upbringing, suffered from mental health issues, and was addicted to methamphetamine from birth. Brown highlighted the influence of Archibeque’s husband and mother-in-law, who subjected her to physical and emotional abuse, making her feel powerless to act.
Throughout the trial, evidence photos of the boys’ living conditions were deemed too disturbing to present during the sentencing hearing, prompting both sides to request sealing pre-sentencing documents to safeguard the other children’s privacy.
Deshaun’s surviving siblings have been placed in foster care, with one sister showing signs of recovery after three years and the other feeling a sense of responsibility for her brothers’ well-being.
