In Rosamond, California, a solar farm named “Solar Star” has been producing electricity to power several homes in the area. The owner, Alicia Knapp, comments that these panels track the sun all day long.
Knapp is both the CEO and president of BHE Renewables, who is responsible for the solar farm. She adds they have enough to power around 255,000 homes – however there are some challenges, such as constructing the transmission line to transport the electricity to homes.
Knapp says that process is much harder than acquiring the land, the farm itself is built on unused farmland. In addition, plenty of solar energy is wasted according to her. The Director of Kern County, Lorelei Oviatt says the delay of power lines hinders progress.

Challenges And Suggestions

Oviatt adds that some individuals dislike power lines, and regulations placed on rules viewed to be “excessive” are slowing down the growth as well. Additionally, other issues are the transmission going between states and farms generating more than what they’re demanded.
However, there have been methods developed to store this excessive energy – through Pumped Storage Hydropower (PSH) together with two water reservoirs and a generator in between. The lower reservoir’s water is pumped to the higher reservoir when the sun is out or wind is blowing.
When either or both factors are gone, the water is transported back to the lower reservoir. Both processes generate energy that is flexible enough to react when time of need, considered as a green battery – which means less carbon footprint, and helps with water management according to Voith.
Voith, a global tech company, adds it’s best when combined with wind and solar farms – which can be used for renewable energy and clean fresh water. Head of Plant & Products Safety and Innovation, Dr. Klaus Krueger remarks it will provide grid stability and a less carbon environment.
