She achieved notable milestones, including being the first Black woman to serve as the Speaker of the General Assembly in New Jersey and just the second Black woman in the nation’s history to lead a state legislative house.

In 2017, when Governor Phil Murphy selected Oliver as his running mate, he recognized her as a trailblazer in every sense of the word. 

She was the perfect co-leader to lead the state of New Jersey because of her many years of public service. While serving in office together,Oliver not only fulfilled her role as Lieutenant Governor but also demonstrated exceptional leadership in handling the Department of Community Affairs.
