A doctor from Boston has been detained and accused of masturbating and exposing himself while sitting next to a 14-year-old girl on a flight.

Thursday, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts charged the doctor, identified as Sudipta Mohanty, 33. He was charged with one count of “lewd, indecent, and obscene acts while in the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States,” which entails a maximum sentence of 90 days in prison, one year of supervised release, and a $5,000 fine. Mohanty was detained on Thursday and released on conditions following his initial appearance before a Boston federal court.

Mohanty, a doctor of internal medicine and primary care in Boston, was allegedly seated next to a 14-year-old girl on a flight from Honolulu to Boston on May 27, 2022, as per the charging documents. Hawaiian Airlines operated this flight. The adolescent was traveling with her grandparents, who occupied seats nearby.

A doctor from Boston has been detained and accused of masturbating and exposing himself while sitting next to a 14-year-old girl on a flight.

Supposedly, Mohanty wrapped himself in a blanket up to his neck. Allegedly, the adolescent noticed that his limb was bouncing up and down. Shortly thereafter, the adolescent observed the blanket on the ground and Mohanty allegedly masturbating. She moved to an unoccupied seat in a different row after comprehending what was happening, according to the charging documents.

After arriving in Boston, the teenager shared the incident with her family. Law enforcement has been informed.

“Everyone, especially children, has the absolute right to not be exposed to lewd conduct when they are traveling,”” said Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy in a press release. “If you engage in the type of illicit behavior alleged here, you will be caught and held accountable wherever it happens.”
