As people around the world ponder the possibility of one day sending people to Mars and subsequently establishing a colony there, scientists are investigating methods to overcome the obstacles preventing the achievement of such objectives. According to the crew, determining how many people and what categories of people would be required to sustain a Mars colony is a necessary consideration.

Modeling a Mars Colony: Factors for Success and Human Traits

To discover potential answers, the team developed a model simulating a Mars colony, focusing on the number of people needed to establish a viable colony and the characteristics that would most likely contribute to the success of such a colony. In order to accomplish this, they utilized data from previous endeavors, such as questionnaires filled out by groups residing aboard the International Space Station or in close quarters in the Arctic for months. They also attempted to account for well-known personality traits such as stress resistance, social skills, and neuroticism.

The research team ran five simulations, each of which simulated 28 Earth years of colony life, while varying variables such as the population of a Mars colony between trials. They determined that 22 individuals were the minimal minimum. In addition, they discovered that individuals with affable personalities were not only more likely to survive such a mission, but also to flourish, allowing the colony to endure. On the other hand, they discovered that individuals with neurotic personalities were more likely to fail their mission and perish sooner than others, placing the mission’s overall success at risk.
