Chipotle Mexican Grill, a popular restaurant chain, has reached a six-figure settlement with Washington, D.C. authorities after an investigation uncovered potential violations of child labor laws. The announcement was made by D.C. Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb on Monday.
The investigation, launched in May 2022, identified over 800 potential violations of child labor laws within the past three years across the company’s 20 stores in the district.
The allegations against Chipotle primarily pertain to violations of child labor laws, with instances of employees under the age of 18 allegedly working more than eight hours a day, exceeding 48 hours per week, and working more than six consecutive days within a week. Additionally, the company is accused of allowing minors to work beyond the legal limit of 10 pm local time.
Under the terms of the settlement, Chipotle has agreed to pay D.C. a sum of $322,400. In addition to the financial penalty, the company has committed to implementing a new training and workplace compliance plan aimed at addressing the alleged violations.
Despite the settlement, Chipotle maintains its stance of denying the allegations brought forward by the District’s Attorney General. The company asserts that the settlement does not constitute an admission of any wrongdoing or violations of law and regulations.

A Closer Look at Child Labor Violation Allegations

This is not the first time Chipotle has faced accusations of child labor violations. In 2020, the company paid the state of Massachusetts $1.4 million to settle alleged violations involving over 13,000 instances of child labor law breaches. Similarly, in September, Chipotle reached a $7.75 million settlement with the state of New Jersey over alleged persistent and widespread violations of child labor laws.
Laurie Schalow, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Chipotle, emphasized the company’s commitment to compliance and improvement. Schalow highlighted the company’s enhanced labor scheduling program, designed to create a more compliant and efficient working environment.
The statement also expressed Chipotle’s belief in providing valuable experiences and advancement opportunities to younger employees, while striving to maintain compliance with labor laws.
The settlement underscores the growing emphasis on labor law enforcement and the need for companies to uphold stringent compliance measures to ensure the well-being of their employees, particularly minors.
As Chipotle takes steps to enhance its labor programs and address past issues, it joins a larger conversation surrounding corporate responsibility and the treatment of young workers in the restaurant industry.
