Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began over 18 months ago, has been marked by a series of military missteps. While Russia has shown signs of learning from its early mistakes, its troops continue to make costly errors.

5 Critical Mistakes

Here are five significant military mistakes Russia has made since February 24, 2022:

1.Failure to Take Kyiv: Russia’s initial promise to swiftly capture the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv proved to be a massive failure. Despite President Putin’s vow, Kyiv remains unconquered 18 months into the conflict.

Russia’s tactical errors, including a lack of air superiority, military convoys falling into Ukrainian ambushes, and a failure to deploy effective battalion tactical groups, contributed to this setback.

2.Repeated Tank Mistakes: Russian forces have consistently struggled with tank warfare during the conflict. Sending unprotected tank columns into Ukrainian ambushes led to significant vehicle losses, often exceeding 100 tanks in a single incident.

These tactical blunders included a lack of fire support, leaving tanks vulnerable to anti-tank missiles, and driving tanks through minefields.

3. HIMARS Attacks: Preventable HIMARS rocket attacks have resulted in significant Russian casualties. In one instance, during the New Year holiday in Makiivka, Ukraine used HIMARS to strike Russian positions, resulting in a confirmed 90 deaths, with estimates suggesting up to 400 casualties. Similar attacks occurred in June and August, revealing Russia’s inability to safely house and lead troops in combat zones.

4. Self-Inflicted Injuries: Russian losses were not solely caused by Ukrainian forces. Accidental detonations of hand grenades in soldier dormitories, mistaken bombings of Russian cities, and reports of Russian soldiers firing on their comrades have all contributed to self-inflicted injuries and casualties.

5. Force Protection Errors: Russia has struggled to protect its key equipment and infrastructure. Drone attacks on Russian air bases hundreds of miles from the frontline marked force protection failures. Ukraine’s ability to strike infrastructure deep within Russian territory has become a new norm, with Russia struggling to defend against these attacks.

Ongoing Russian Invasion of Ukraine

These military mistakes have had significant consequences for Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, highlighting the challenges faced by President Putin’s troops. As the conflict continues, these errors serve as a reminder of the complexities and pitfalls of modern warfare.
