A school district in Southern California will pay $2.25 million to resolve the latest lawsuit involving a teacher who allegedly sexually abused at least two students, one of whom became pregnant.
Southern California News Group reported on Sunday that the settlement increases the total amount paid by Redlands Unified School District to Laura Whitehurst’s victims since her 2013 indictment to $8.25 million.
In August 2016, the district consented to pay a former pupil $6 million for impregnating Whitehust while he was her teacher.
Morgan Stewart, the plaintiff’s attorney, stated that the latest suit was filed in 2021 by a former student who claimed Whitehurst sexually abused him at Redlands High School in 2007 and 2008 when he was 14 years old. According to a police report, Whitehurst confessed to police in 2013 that she had intercourse with the youth 10 to 15 times in her classroom and apartment.

Redlands Unified spokeswoman Christine Stephens stated on Friday that the district was aware of the recent settlement, but was unable to comment due to non-disclosure agreements.
In the other lawsuit, the boy who fathered Whitehurst’s child claimed that Redlands Unified officials were aware of his relationship with the educator but neglected to warn his family.
Whitehurst gave birth in 2014, a year after having intercourse with the boy beginning when he was 16 years old. Whitehurst, an English instructor and soccer coach, pled guilty to unlawful sexual contact with three former students. She was incarcerated for six months and registered as a sexual offender.
