The Israeli government has formally declared war on Hamas, hours after its military began bombarding the Gaza Strip with the stated objective of eradicating the militant organization and acquiring complete control of the Palestinian territory.

In the meantime, US officials have predicted that Israel will launch a full-scale ground invasion within the next 24 to 48 hours. The resolution to officially declare war occurred overnight and was proclaimed on Sunday by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose office stated that “significant military activities” would now commence, according to The Times of Israel.

More than 600 Israelis were slain in a shocking cross-border assault by militants based in Gaza. Videos depict elderly women being murdered while waiting at a bus stop in southern Israel, as well as the lifeless corpses of music festival attendees near the border.

It is believed that approximately 100 individuals, including women and children, were abducted and returned to the Palestinian territory.

The Israeli government has formally declared war on Hamas, hours after its military began bombarding the Gaza Strip with the stated objective of eradicating the militant organization and acquiring complete control of the Palestinian territory.

Even before the formal declaration of war, Israel took action against alleged Hamas targets in Gaza, where it urged civilians to avoid areas occupied by the militant group, which has ruled the territory since 2006, the last time residents of the territory participated in an election. In the densely populated enclave, where Israel accuses Hamas of deliberately positioning weapons and militants near civilians, civilians claim it is impossible to reach safety.

A 14-story apartment structure in Gaza City was destroyed on Saturday by an Israeli airstrike. According to local health authorities, more than 300 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict so far. The Israel Defense Forces stated in a statement on Sunday that they were bombing targets in Gaza with one objective in mind: “To control the entire enclave and kill all terrorists on our territory,” Lt. Col. Richard Hech told reporters.

Prior to 2005, Israel occupied the Gaza Strip, but then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon supervised a strategic disengagement and the destruction of the last Jewish settlements there. Since then, the stretch has been mainly obstructed.

The last significant conflict between Israel and Hamas occurred in 2014, claiming the lives of 2,200 Gazans.
