While the reasons behind each person’s wall of emotion are unique, frequent causes are involved in a lot of situations that demand accountability, force us to be there for others, or trigger strong emotions. I don’t know about you, but that sounds a lot like the struggles that every parent has to deal with every day.

If you attempt to push through while feeling psychologically worn out, you can notice that your mood and sleep are severely affected, that you’re less patient with your family, and that you’re turning to junk food and drink for solace.

Long-term stress like this may increase your vulnerability to anxiety and depression. Or burnout might result from it. Board-certified psychiatrist Margaret Seide, MD, says we might not be able to manage the stresses of daily living, let alone the emotionally stressful situation we are also in.

You can tell when you need to reassess your situation by being aware of the symptoms of mental tiredness. Here are nine things to watch out for along with some recovery tips.

Our brains can become mentally exhausted in the same way that our muscles can after a strenuous exercise or endurance run.

According to Seide, mental tiredness might make you constantly in a low-grade fight-or-flight phase. Due to your body’s ongoing need to stay alert for potential threats in your surroundings, you experience constant anxiety as a result.

You’re Sleep Deprived

Seide said that you can be too tired to sleep. This is what happens when you are mentally spent but are unable to relax. She continues, since sleep is an active activity, the brain must function properly for sleep to occur.

Of course, when the brain is sick, it doesn’t work at its best. Furthermore, insufficient sleep or sleeplessness can exacerbate mental tiredness.

It’s Hard To Concentrate

It could be difficult for you to concentrate on one work at a time because so many things are going through your head at the moment.

However, if you find it difficult to focus or speak clearly, this may indicate that your brain is depleted and that some of its most fundamental processes are impaired, according to Zagame.

Even Minor Tasks Seem Overwhelming

Everything feels difficult when you’re psychologically worn out, even simple things like folding laundry. Everything seems to have too many steps and to be too complicated. It’s just that your brain is too exhausted to do anything that requires the slightest amount of work.

You’ve Run Out of Bourbon

Alternatively, you may just keep eating all of the ice cream sandwiches you got the kids. In either case, you’re trying to soothe yourself by self-medicating.

According to Seide, you’re also giving in to cravings for sugar, alcohol, and maybe marijuana since your body is prioritizing what it needs to survive right now, which makes it harder for you to make wise, fast judgments.

If you’ve noticed any or all of these symptoms lately, you should take some time to create a self-care regimen that works for you.

Consider the things that tend to give you a sense of security, stability, and calmness since they replenish both your physical and emotional energies. You might or might not do these same things when you’re bored, lonely, stressed, or exhausted.

Take a stroll across your area. Engage in playtime with the dog. Spend 15 minutes in meditation. In any case, try incorporating one or more of those, even if just for a short while, into your everyday routine.

It’s also critical to stress the basics: eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and exercising.

Seide suggests that you try to get as much rest as possible and avoid doing anything for a day or longer. Unplug all of your electronics, work, and anything else that is stressing you out. A difficult request, but if you can, fulfill it.

Assistance is also essential. According to Zagame, having someone take care of you or listen to you with empathy while you discuss your struggles and feelings can be very rejuvenating.

That someone could be a friend, family member, or partner—anyone with whom you feel comfortable having an honest conversation. Alternatively, it might be a trained individual, such a psychologist or therapist.
