According to recent data, drug overdoses are becoming increasingly prevalent in New York. Shockingly, over 3,000 fatalities were reported in the last year alone, with an overwhelming 89% of these tragic incidents being attributed to the synthetic drug fentanyl.
The streets are now being flooded with a new synthetic drug that is causing growing concern due to its highly lethal nature.
Carfentanil, a potent drug capable of sedating an elephant, can be fatal if ingested, even in small amounts. Tragically, this drug has been linked to seven overdose deaths in the city this year alone.
Bridget Brennan, the Special Narcotics Prosecutor, expressed her concerns over the possibility of a surge in the number.
In an interview with PIX11 News, she emphasized the inherent dangers of the current street drug market. According to her, the risk of purchasing drugs that could prove fatal has never been higher.
According to Brennan, Carfentanil is a substance in powder form that originates from China and infiltrates the illegal drug market via Mexico. To prevent the situation from escalating as it did with fentanyl, undercover agents are intensifying their efforts to track down the source and the dealers. The stakes are high since overdose rates are already at an all-time high, and Carfentanil can be deadly with just a single grain. “If left unchecked, overdoses could spike even higher,” Brennan warned.
Carfentanil, a potent drug, has been detected in all five boroughs of New York City. However, the majority of seizures of the drug were made in Brooklyn, with one of them being in Bushwick.
Brennan stated that carfentanil was discovered in several bags during the seizure. The lethal substance was mixed with various drugs such as cocaine, fentanyl, heroin, and other white powders. She emphasized that the users of these drugs are not intentionally choosing to consume carfentanil. They are unaware that the substance is mixed into the drugs they purchase, which can result in fatal consequences. The responsibility lies with the sellers who are distributing these dangerous drugs.
The city and state health departments have expressed concern over the increasing number of overdose cases and have taken action by releasing public health alerts. These alerts caution against the usage of a lethal new drug that is being added to already hazardous drugs.
The special prosecutor delivered a sobering addition to the already frightening facts, stating, “Fentanyl kills quickly, but carfentanil, which is 100 times more powerful, kills much more quickly.”
