(DARLINGTON COUNTY) – There are two lessons the school district and community members invariable realize at the end of the Darlington County School District’s Principal for a Day program: 1) It’s not easy being a principal and 2) Fresh eyes bring fresh ideas.

The Principal for a Day program gives community members and business leaders an opportunity to experience modern public schools first-hand. For the guest principals, it’s an eye-opening experience. For the school district, it’s a chance to get frank feedback and suggestions for improving our schools.

This year’s Principal for a Day program will be held March 5. Schools will be assigned on a first-come, first served basis. Participants arrive when the schools open and shadow the principals until lunch. The guest principals observe all aspects of a principal’s daily tasks and take an active role in the day’s responsibilities, including overseeing bus lines, working with parents, visiting classrooms and responding to discipline needs.

At the end of the event, Dr. Tim Newman, superintendent of the Darlington County School District, conducts a debriefing luncheon for all participants. The luncheon is arguably the most important part of the day, giving the guest principals a chance to share their experiences and insight with the actual principals and district staff.

Everyone is welcome to participate. Space is limited and slots fill quickly. To sign up to serve as a guest principal, please contact the Darlington County School District’s Office of Communications at 843-398-2284.
