Dr. Charlie Burry, Hartsville High School Principal, Announces Retirement
Dr. Charlie Burry, longtime principal of Hartsville High School, has announced his retirement at the end of the school year. Burry’s retirement brings to a close a 45-year career in public education, the last 40 years at Hartville High School as a teacher, coach, school counselor, and the principal for the past 14 years.
Hartsville High School has experienced great progress during Burry’s tenure as principal. Academic and fine arts programs have improved, new facilities have been built and old ones renovated, and the Red Fox athletic program has been highly successful. The school became an International Baccalaureate Programme school as well as a member of Hartsville’s award-winning PULSE initiative.
“When I became principal 14 years ago, we said that Hartsville High School was going to become a great school, and the plan was called a ‘Red Fox Renaissance’,” Burry. Through the commitment, loyalty, and hard work of many people, that plan has come to fruition. Our International Baccalaureate Programme offers educational opportunities at world-class standards. Our fine arts programs - band, chorus, orchestra, and visual arts - are recognized as some of the best in the state. Facilities-wise, the crown jewel is the Hartsville High School Arena; however, our entire campus has been made safer and more attractive. Kelleytown Stadium has also been restored to a physical state that matches its great tradition and history. I believe that the Red Fox Renaissance is alive and well in our community.”
Burry continued, “For the past 40 years I have been blessed to work with many fine people, outstanding educators, and wonderful students, as well as some of the best friends of my life. I will greatly miss those relationships greatly, as that is the foundation upon which we have built our school culture. Those opportunities and relationships are deeply appreciated, and it is my belief that the Red Fox Renaissance will continue to build a legacy of hope and possibility for everyone at Hartsville High School. We are and will always be . . . Red Foxes!”
Dr. Bill Boyd, interim superintendent, praised Dr. Burry, saying, “Dr. Burry has been a valued member of the DCSD family and a respected leader in Hartsville. He is a passionate educator, dedicated to his students, teachers, and community. Though we will miss his leadership, we know Dr. Burry will continue to impact the lives of those around him.”
The district will begin the search for a new principal for Hartsville High School within the next few weeks.
