Local High School Student Honors Veterans and Their Widows
Hartsville, SC—Local Hartsville High School student, Kimberly McElroy, will be in the City of Hartsville’s Centennial Park on Valentine’s Day from 4:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. honoring veterans and their widows for the sacrifices they have made for this country. Kimberly is hosting this event in memory of her grandfather, Richard L. Boatwright, who once hosted banquets in Hartsville to thank them for their service and as her service project for Miss HHS Pageant. Kimberly hopes that this small token will remind these people that we have not forgotten the price they paid for our freedom. She is starting with a smaller scale event this year, but hopes that this can grow into a community wide annual event complete with a meal, speakers, and flowers just as her grandfather once did. Kimberly says, “I am very excited for the opportunity to hand out flowers to Darlington County veterans and widows of veterans. I can’t wait to thank each one of them and hear a little bit about each of their stories. This project holds a very special place in my heart and I cannot wait to honor my grandfather’s legacy with this event.”
Kimberly’s goal is to hand out 250 flowers in Centennial Park this year. She invites anyone that is a veteran or widow of a veteran of any branch to come out to receive a flower from 4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on February 14, 2019 in Centennial Park at the corner of 5th Street and Carolina Avenue in Hartsville. This event is made possible by generous donors from around the City of Hartsville.
