Foxes celebrate another win

The Hartsville Red Foxes found themselves once again undefeated in their steady climb to the state championship bowl.

The Brookland-Cayce Bearcats from Cayce, boarded their buses and headed over to the Kelleytown stadium in hopes for a chance to win against the Red Foxes in 40 degree temperatures. It was indeed an emotional rollercoaster ride as this second round game played out.

In the first quarter, the Bearcats made believers out of the Red Foxes. They managed to recover a Red Fox fumble and scored two touchdowns. With under a minute left in the quarter, the Red Foxes came back with a score to bring the overall score to Bearcats 14, Foxes 7.

In the second quarter both teams held each other at bay until Brookland-Cayce completed a 40 yard pass into the end zone for another touchdown. Both teams scored two touchdowns in this second quarter, however Hartsville was yet trailing in this first half of the game.

The Foxes slowly began to thaw out in the second half and find their groove, but according to coach Calabrese, “We can’t keep playing this way and expect to win, in the playoffs, it’s about surviving and moving forward. I certainly don’t think we played our best football.”

Both teams had their share of fumbles, interceptions and penalties. #15 Tiyon Evans rushed 19 times for 132 yards, scored two unofficial touchdowns, but fumbled twice. He was 4-8-2 for 87 yards and two touchdowns. One of the interceptions was a pick-six.

#5 RB Dariyan Pendergrass, #32 RB Darian McMillan, #1 JD Pendergrass and #3 RB Collins Bishop all scored touchdowns for the Foxes during the course of the game. The Foxes had three fourth quarter interceptions by JD Pendergrass, Owen Taylor and Rod Gattison. #19 DL DeMonte Capehart had an 85-yard scoop and score after Owen Taylor jolted the ball from the Bearcats in the final quarter.

By the end of the quarter and the ball game, the Foxes frantically recovered from a rocky start and were able to celebrate yet another victory with a score of Foxes 68, Bearcats 35.

This next press of the third round this week will be against the North Augusta Yellowjackets at our home field. The Red Foxes as well as all their fans are hoping for another win on November 23rd and they need your support so please come on out to the Kelleytown stadium at 7:30 and enjoy this important conference game.

The Shoney’s offensive player of the week was #4 RB Lacy Josey and the Shoney’s defensive player of the week was #17 DB Rod Gattison.

Congratulations to both players and to the entire team and staff of the Hartsville Red Foxes. Go Foxes!
