Hartsville native assumes command of Marine brigade

Major Gen. Stephen M. Neary relinquished command of 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade to Brig. Gen. David L. Odom, a Hartsville native and 1991 graduate of The Citadel, during a change of command ceremony Friday at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Odom’s prior assignment was as the commanding general of Task Force Southwest during Operation Resolute Support in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. A career infantryman, he has held command at all levels, including 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment during Operation Enduring Freedom, 4th Marine Regiment in Okinawa, Japan, and assistant commander of 2nd Marine Division.

After graduating from Hartsville High, Odom attended The Citadel where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. He later earned a master’s degree in military, operational, and strategic studies from Marine Corps University.

Odom is married to retired Marine Lt. Col. Michelle Trusso, and the couple has two children, Tasher, 20, and Barrett, 17. He is the son of Sara Odom and the late Phil Odom of Hartsville.

Odom’s personal decorations include the Legion of Merit (with Combat Distinguishing Device), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (with Gold Star), the Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with Gold Star), the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with 2 Gold Stars) and the Combat Action Ribbon, according to the U.S. Marine Corps website.
