Red Foxes down Camden

By Coach Jimmy White

The Hartsville Red Foxes defeated the Camden Bulldogs 41-7 Friday night at Kelleytown Stadium. It was all Hartsville after the first quarter, as they used big plays to win for the 7th straight year in the longest ongoing rivalry in South Carolina high school football. The story of the game on offense was once again big plays in both the running and passing game.

On defense, the Red Foxes contained a potent Camden offense that came in averaging over 400 yards and 35 points a game. Camden received the opening kickoff and moved down the field inside the Hartsville ten yard line, but a Rod Gattison interception gave the Foxes the ball on their 6 yd. line. Hartsville moved down the field and AJ Joyner connected on a 48 yd. TD pass to Tiyon Evans.

Mike Norris converted the PAT and the Foxes led 7-0 with 2:50 left in the quarter. Camden answered with a drive that ended with a 6 yd. TD run. The PAT made the score 7-7 as the first quarter ended. Hartsville took control of the game with a 68 TD run by Evans with 11:44 in the 2nd quarter.

The Red Fox defense allowed yardage, but no points as they began taking over the game. With just over 4 mins. left before the half, Evans struck again with a 16 yd. run that increased the lead to 20-7 after the Norris extra points. The 3rd quarter began with Foxes seemingly adding another score as Evans again scored on a 68 yd. run.

The Foxes were called for a penalty that took the points off the board. After both teams exchanged punts, Hartsville started a drive on the 19 yd. line. After reaching midfield, Evans scored again on a 49 yd. run, making it a 27-7 game. As the quarter ended, the Foxes took over at their 10 yd. line after a long Camden drive.

Early in the final quarter, Hartsville gambled on 4th and 1 on their own 29 yd. line. After picking up the first down, Camden’s defense began to show signs of wearing down. AJ Joyner struck again on a 60 yd. TD pass to Evans. After the PAT, the score was 34-7 and Tiyon Evans called it a night after scoring his 5th TD of the game.

The Red Fox defense also did their part, stopping Camden twice on 4th down plays. Hartsville backup players got in the act with a drive that ended with a TD run by Donovan Lambert, making the final score 41-7. The Bizzell’s Offensive Player of the game was Tiyon Evans who scored 5 total TD’s, accounting for 258 yds on the night.

The Bizzell’s Defensive Player of the game was JD Pendergrass as he lead the secondary, controlling Camden’s passing game holding them to only 69 yds through the air. Next week the Foxes take the 3-0 record on the road to Conway for 7:30 Friday night game. Go out and support the Foxes.
