Hartsville Red Fox football 2015 preview
By: Coach Jimmy White Finishing 14-1 and Lower State champions, the Red Fox football players felt that was not enough. The loss in the last game of the year created a sense of determination to do the work necessary to get another chance to become state champions. Led by Coach Jeff Calabrese, the Foxes seem to have a permanent reservation in the playoffs each year.
Calabrese, 95-32 in his 10 years at Hartsville, along with an excellent staff of assistant coaches, turns out winning teams year after year. With a total of 13 returning starters, expectations are high once again. One of the team's strengths would be 7 returning players who have experience starting over the last 3 years, on offense, the names of QB Matt Lynch, RB Brian Rivers, and RB Shy McPhail are familiar to the Red Fox fans who follow the program. On defense, LB Datavious Wilson, DB Riaquan Cotton, DB Eddie Martin, and DE Shymon Brockington are back to lead the way in shutting down the opposing offenses.
When making an overall assessment, the main concern has to be the lack of quality depth in certain areas. With many young and inexperienced players being “next up”, it is vital that this team avoids injuries, especially early, until some depth is developed. With that in mind, pre-season practices have focused on perfecting the plays in the Wing-T offense that has produced offensive stats at a dizzying pace the last few years. On defense, Coach Koonts is spending a great deal of time making sure the players know their assignments in the Foxes 3-4 defense.
It all adds up to the excitement about the upcoming season, as the Foxes open up Friday, August 21st with a home game against Central Pageland at 7:30. The 2015 team captains Datavious Wilson, Riquan Benjamin and Logan Carpenter invite everyone to come out to Kelleytown Stadium to support and enjoy another Red Fox football season. See you there!
