Red Foxes roll over Conway

By Coach Jimmy White

For the third straight week, the Hartsville Red Foxes topped the 60 point mark as they defeated the Conway Tigers 62-28 at Billy Seigler Field at Kelleytown Stadium. The Foxes had a little trouble running their record to 4-0 with a second victory over a 5A opponent. After forcing a Conway fumble on the second play of the game on the Conway 24 yard line, Tiyon Evans scored on the first play after the turnover.

Miller Braddock’'s point after touchdown was good, and the Foxes led 7-0 with 10:37 to go. Conway then went on an 80 yard drive, punching it in with a 12 yard run by quarterback Peyton Derrick. The point after touchdown made the score 7-7. With the Foxes taking over on their 48 yard line after the kickoff, Tiyon Evans scored on the first play from 52 yards away. The extra point was good, making it 14-7 at the 6:13 mark.

The Red Fox defense forced a 3 and out, taking over at the Conway 38 yard line where Evans scored again on the first play. Braddock’s point after touchdown made the score 21-7. Once again, a defensive stand gave Hartsville the ball back on Conway’s 41 yard line. This time, Collins Bishop scored from 34 yards out on 2nd down, making 4 touchdowns in 5 plays for the Red Fox offense. With the point after touchdown, Hartsville led 28-7 at the 1:37 mark of the 1st quarter.

Logan Carpenter then tipped a pass that was intercepted by Montrez Williams on the Conway 28 yard line. Bishop finally ran it from 5 yards out, giving the Foxes a 34-7 lead. With 1:56 left before the half, Conway got on the board with a Derrick to Huggins 9 yard touchdown pass, and the extra point made it 34-14. The Foxes struck back quickly before the half with a 33 yard touchdown pass from AJ Joyner to Steve Joyner. Braddock’s point after touchdown made halftime score 41-14.

The second half became a little sloppy, as the Foxes had to deal with fumbles and penalties. After fumbling the first play of the 2nd half, Conway was able to move down the field with Clark scoring on a 1 yard run. The extra point made it 41-21 at the 8:11 mark. With 4:38 left in the quarter, the Foxes overcame a penalty to score on a 48 yard run on a 3rd and 18 play. The point after touchdown made the score 48-21.

After a fumbled punt recovered by the Tigers, Conway moved down the field, scoring on a Clarke 2 yard run, making it 48-28. In the 4th quarter, Evans scored his 5th touchdown of the night, and the extra point made it 55-28. The Foxes got the ball back after a defensive 3 and out, and the second unit had a nine drive down the field. Darious Rhodes took it in from 11 yards out and Braddock’s point after touchdown made the final score 62-28.

The Shug’s Smokehouse Offensive Player of the game for his outstanding blocking on the edge was J.C. Clair, helping pave the way for 386 yards on the ground for Hartsville. The Shug’s Smokehouse Defensive Player of the game was defensive back Jaylen Evans for his excellent coverage during the game. Next week the Foxes travel to face the Marlboro County Bulldogs at 7:30 on Friday night. Come out and support your Foxes!
