Foxes top Demons
The Hartsville Red Foxes were finally able to put away the scrappy Lugoff-Elgin Demons 28-14 this past Friday night on the road to open the region schedule. The lack of practice due to Hurricane Matthew seemed to have a negative impact on the efficiency of the usually high-powered offense of the Red Foxes.
Even though the Foxes jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead it was due mainly to the Demon’s mistakes. Lugoff fumbled on the first play of the game on their 17 yard line and the Foxes quickly moved to the 5 yard line where AJ Joyner ran it in. Miller Braddock added the point after, making it 7-0 Foxes with 10:42 in the first quarter.
The defense forced a 3 and out helped by a bad snap over the quarterback’s head, putting the ball inside the 1 yard line. After a short punt, the Foxes took over on the Demon’s 30 yard line. On fourth down, AJ Joyner completed a 29 yard touchdown pass to Tiyon Evans who made a spectacular one-handed grab in the end zone.
Braddock converted the PAT and the Foxes led 14-0 with 6:48 to go in the first quarter. For the remainder of the half there was very little offense as both teams struggled with turnovers and penalties. Right before the half ended Lugoff put together a penalty-aided drive to reach the Red Foxes 1 yard line. Quarterback Chandler Price snuck it in the end zone on the final play of the half.
The PAT made it 14-7 Foxes as the teams headed to the dressing rooms. The second half began with the Foxes throwing an iinterception on the second play. The Red Fox defense held, giving the ball back to the offense near midfield. The Foxes put together a drive behind good runs by Evans and Joyner.
The one yard quarterback sneak by Joyner and Braddock’s PAT stretched the lead out to 21-7 with 4:37 left in the third quarter. Lugoff then drove into Red Fox territory aided by penalties before scoring on a well-executed running play from 32 yards out. The PAT cut the Red Fox lead to 21-14 with 11 seconds left in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter saw more penalties and sloppy play until the Foxes took over on the Lugoff 32 yard line after forcing a punt from the Demon’s end zone. JC Clair scored on a nine yard run and the PAT made the final score 28-14. In spite of having to overcome the lack of practice, the Foxes ended up with 299 yards of offense.
115 yards of penalties continued to stall several drives as the offense struggled to get points on the board. With the win, the Foxes moved to 6-1 and 1-0 in the region. The Shug’s Smokehouse Offensive Player of the game was AJ Joyner who passed for one touchdown and ran for another.
The Shug’s Smokehouse Defensive Player of the game was Daquan Addison who was credited with four individual tackles and had excellent coverage from his defensive backfield spot. The Foxes return home next week to take on the Crestwood Knights in a 7:30 match up at Billy Seigler field at Kellytown Stadium. Come out and give the Foxes your support.
