Red Foxes advance to Lower State
By Coach Jimmy White
The Hartsville Red Foxes rode a strong second half defensive effort and Tiyon Evans’ 4 touchdown runs to defeat the Orangeburg-Wilkinson Bruins 35-20 this past Friday night at Kellytown Stadium. The win puts the Foxes in the Lower State Championship game Friday night on the road at Chapin.
With all scouting reports indicating the Bruins were a run-first offensive, the Foxes had a slow start as Orangeburg-Wilkinson spread the field and came out throwing. Adjustments on defense allowed the Foxes to break the 14-14 tie at halftime and dominate the second half.
In the first quarter the Foxes took the opening kickoff and drove 59 yards, with a 19 yard run finishing the drive by Tiyon Evans, the first of his 4 touchdowns on the night. Miller Braddock added the extra point for a 7-0 lead at the 8:40 mark. After picking up two first downs, the Bruins were forced to punt. The Foxes drove to the Bruin 34 before turning it over on downs.
The second quarter began with O-W at midfield and moving the ball with the short passing game. The drive ended with a 14 yard touchdown pass. The extra point was good, making it 7-7 with 10:38 left in the half. The Foxes then had a methodical 74 yard drive, capped off by Evans’ second touchdown from 3 yards out. With the extra point, the Foxes led 14-7.
The Bruins used a good return and a 15 yard penalty to begin their drive on the Foxes’ 35 yard line. The short drive ended with an eight yard touchdown pass, and the successful PAT made the halftime score 14-14. With O-W getting thesecond half kickoff there was concern that the Bruins could have momentum. The Foxes made a big play, stopping a fake punt attempt, taking over at the Bruins’ 39 yard line.
Quickly, the Foxes moved down the field and Evans ran it in from 4 yards out. Braddock converted the PAT and the Foxes led 21-14 at the 6:48 mark. Late in the third quarter Hartsville started a drive on their 33 yard line. Facing a 3rd and long, AJ Joyner converted with passes to Steve Joyner for a first down, and then again with a pass to Christopher Morris to give the Foxes first and goal from the three.
Collins Bishop ran it in for a touchdown and the PAT made it 28-14. After a 3 and out, the Foxes took over on their 40 yard line. On the first play Evans scored his fourth touchdown on a 60 yard sprint into the end zone. Braddock completed his perfect night with the PAT making the score 35-14.
O-W added a late touchdown on a 26 yard pass play, but the PAT was no good, making the final score 35-20. The Shug’s Smokehouse Offensive Player of the Game was Tiyon Evans who had 205 yards rushing out of the 395 total rushing yards and scoring 4 touchdowns.
The Shug’s Smokehouse Defensive Player of the Game was Jaylen Evans with 8 solo tackles. The Red Foxes continue their playoff quest with a trip to Chapin High School, who defeated North Myrtle Beach 38-7. The game will be for the Lower State Championship. Go out and support the Red Foxes.
