It’s nice to be nice

Random acts of kindness are a crash course in being more like Christ. You want to be more like Christ? Then I suggest that you sharpen your acts of kindness skills. For instance, if you are approached by a beggar or panhandler and you don’t have money to give or don’t feel lead to give, then offer a hug instead. Some of us would never think of giving an undesirable, unkempt, smelly homeless person a hug, but Jesus did it to us. According to the scriptures we were wretches undone and our goodness as filthy rags.

We would rather give a beggar a dollar than to embrace them right where they are and allow them to feel the arms of Jesus cuddle them in their dark place. Perhaps you did give them a dollar, but Jesus presented the opportunity to hug this hurting person. We sometimes don’t consider this option because we don’t want out of our comfort zone. We walk away feeling like we’ve really done something great giving from our pocket when it was an opportunity to give from our heart…and we missed it. The good news is that it’s not too late! Every day is another chance to listen to instruction and follow through.

It’s okay to just be nice. It might be a bad day for you, but for someone else, it could be the day they plan to end their life. You can make the difference by being attentive and applicable. There are people counting on you to be warm and inviting so that they will know that the world is not such a bad place to exist after all. Will you commit to being pleasant even though you’re hurting yourself? Try it and watch how you can be instrumental in changing the atmosphere around you, your home, and your city…the world! Someone is waiting!
