Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has signed 18 new bills to provide better support to people with developmental disabilities. This legislative package, which gained bipartisan support, aims to enhance inclusivity and accessibility in crucial areas such as education, recreation, law enforcement, and transitional services. The move is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of people with developmental disabilities in Virginia.

During the signing ceremony, Governor Youngkin highlighted his dedication to the community. He acknowledged that the state of Virginia has neglected this community for a long time and, as the Governor, he pledged to improve the level of care, support, and resources available to Virginians with developmental disabilities. The Governor is committed to advocating, championing, and speaking up for Virginians, and he expressed his satisfaction with the life-changing impacts that the legislative package and Right Help, Right Now plan will bring to Virginia families. He believes that these initiatives will transform the level of care for Virginians with developmental disabilities for many years to come.

Under the leadership of Youngkin, the recently signed biennium budget has made significant financial provisions to further support the initiative. The budget has allocated a total of $247 million for 3,440 priority one waiver slots, which marks a considerable increase in the state’s capacity to aid those with developmental disabilities. With this funding increase, the total number of additional slots now stands at 4,540. This move demonstrates the state’s commitment to providing better care and support for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Virginia’s approach to developmental disability services is constantly evolving, as evident in the recent legislative and financial push. The primary aim of these efforts is to provide those in need with the necessary support and resources to enhance their quality of life. This forward-thinking commitment to inclusivity and proper care sets a precedent for future initiatives in the state, reflecting Virginia’s dedication to improving the lives of affected individuals.
