The Democratic National Convention is only a few weeks away and follows what is being hailed as a successful Republican National Convention. Memphis, Tennessee is the venue for this event.
One Mississippi delegate is eagerly preparing to cast her vote at the upcoming convention, joining other delegates from the Mid-South who are also getting ready for the event.
Kelly Jacobs caught our attention as soon as we stepped outside the DeSoto County courthouse in Hernando. It wasn’t just her striking Kamala Harris dress that made her stand out, but also her confident demeanor.
She stated that she created the Kamala Harris fabric and subsequently bought the dress through an online purchase.
Desoto County’s Democratic Convention delegate, Jacobs, is thrilled about Kamala Harris’ ascent to the top of the ticket and eagerly anticipates witnessing the historical moment.
When asked about her motivation to become a delegate, Jacobs replied, “I wanted to showcase my enthusiasm and flaunt my collection of outfits.” However, with President Biden’s withdrawal from the race and Vice President Harris stepping in, Jacobs noticed a shift in the political climate. Though she has been a DNC delegate on five prior occasions, she feels a renewed sense of energy this time around.
“She exclaimed, “There is now a tremendous excitement with Kamala leading the ticket.”
Jacobs reached out to WREG as the deadline for delegates to cast their ballot drew near. She extended an invitation for us to witness a historic moment as she cast her vote for an African American female presidential candidate. Other delegates also recognize the significance of their role in this process. Former Shelby County Commissioner Terry Roland recently returned from the Republican National Convention, describing it as a large family gathering.
Roland expressed his surprise at witnessing a significant number of individuals who he believed would never vote for the Republican party now supporting them.
On Friday, it was announced by Harris’ campaign that she had obtained sufficient votes from delegates to become the Democratic nominee.
