On Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, a Golden Retriever proved to be a true hero when it saved a Poodle from a fatal encounter with a coyote. The courageous dog spotted the pup in danger and intervened just in time, allowing the Poodle to escape without any injuries. The coyote had the other canine by the neck, and it might not have ended well for them if the Golden Retriever hadn’t stepped in. This brave act of kindness undoubtedly saved the Poodle’s life.

In June, Ashly Chardukian and her Golden Retriever, Kona, were enjoying a relaxing day at the beach when they heard yelping coming from behind them. Upon investigation, they discovered a Poodle being attacked by a coyote, with the pup’s owner frantically attempting to intervene. The coyote had the Poodle pinned by the neck, and the situation appeared dire.
As the coyote was about to attack the Poodle, Kona sprang into action, rushing towards the wild animal while barking fiercely. Startled by Kona’s sudden appearance, the coyote abandoned its prey and fled the scene. Thanks to the timely intervention of the Golden Retriever, the Poodle was saved from harm and managed to escape unscathed. It was a fortunate outcome, considering that small dogs like Poodles are particularly vulnerable to attacks by coyotes.
According to Chardukian, when she saw Kona’s actions, she initially had some doubts since it wasn’t something that Kona was trained to do. However, she quickly realized that what Kona did was truly exceptional. Chardukian expressed her excitement, saying, “It was such a special moment to witness, and I’m thrilled that the other dog was rescued. I’m incredibly proud of Kona.”
According to Police Chief Glenn Meadows, there were three instances of coyote sightings earlier this year, but the frequency of attacks has significantly decreased since then. It has been observed that the coyotes tend to attack only those dogs that are not leashed. Chief Meadows also pointed out that we have been fortunate enough that the coyotes have only targeted young pups, which can be prevented by keeping them leashed at all times.
