The Christmas season will have a hint of heavenly magic when the full moon in December shines down on the festivities.
This lunar event, dubbed the Cold Moon, is expected to produce an amazing show toward the end of the month. Here’s all the information you need to see its splendor.
NASA predicts that the highly awaited full moon in December 2023 will be at its brightest on Wednesday, December 27, right after Christmas.
However, the nights of December 24 and 25 saw the moon appear nearly full. Families will have the ideal environment to enjoy under the moon on two nights, with 93 and 98 percent illumination, respectively.
A partial lunar eclipse is also a bonus celestial treat that occurs with December’s full moon. According to NASA specialists, this happens when the sun, Earth, and moon are not perfectly aligned, allowing the moon to pass through only a portion of Earth’s umbra.

For What Reason is it Known as the Cold Moon?
It’s the first full moon following the winter solstice, when temperatures in the northern hemisphere usually drop below freezing, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, thus the meaning of this title is obvious.
Winter solstice: The longest night and shortest day of the year, giving aficionados more time to observe Earth’s moonlike satellite in awe.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts that in the Indianapolis region, moonrise will happen at 17:54 on December 27, crossing the meridian at 00:58, and setting at 09:00 on December 28 for those who are keen to see the Cold Moon.
In the meantime, the Charlotte region should see a moonrise at approximately 17:49 p.m. on Tuesday, December 26, and the moon will set on Wednesday at 08:21.
Native American culture is where the name “Cold Moon” first appeared, particularly in reference to the typically colder weather associated with December in the Northern Hemisphere.
