7 Taboo Queries: What Not to Ask Siri, Google Assistant, or Alexa

Imagine being faced with a scenario where you have to administer CPR to potentially save someone’s life. Oh dear, you can’t recall anything from that course 15 years ago.

One might assume that a prompt to Siri would efficiently display the instructions, but it is actually the least effective approach. Researchers in a recent study inquired voice assistants about cardiac arrest emergencies. Yes, it was a total catastrophe.

Please avoid making this mistake.

If someone requires CPR, dial 911 immediately. Short and to the point. Out of the 32 assistants, only nine responses hinted at this crucial step. An impressive 88% of responses provided a website detailing the steps to perform CPR. Is that so?

For those looking for guidance or interested in a review, the Red Cross website provides the necessary information. You might be aware that “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees is a great choice to sing during CPR, as its tempo matches the required beats per minute for chest compressions.

It’s great, but here are a few other recommendations you might remember better:

  • “Baby Shark” by Pinkfong
  • “Dancing Queen” by ABBA
  • “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper
  • “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor
  • “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd

Considering the possibility of your smart assistant guiding you to a website during an emergency made me contemplate other commands you should avoid. Here are seven tasks you should take care of on your own.

1.Play doctor

Avoid seeking medical advice from Siri, Google, or Alexa, even for critical situations. Relying on those intelligent assistants could potentially exacerbate the situation. It’s recommended to contact or schedule a telehealth appointment with your doctor.

2. Ways to cause harm to another person

It’s important to avoid inquiring with your smart assistant about causing harm to someone, even if it’s just to let off steam. Interactions with Siri or Google Assistant may have legal consequences if misused. Please refrain from sharing those thoughts.

3. Anything that ends up with your mug shot

It’s important to avoid asking Alexa about illegal activities or anything suspicious. Asking your smart assistant about harmful actions could potentially be used against you.

4. Take on the role of a telephone operator

If you need to contact your nearest Home Depot to check if they have an item in stock, please locate the phone number on your own. Similarly, requesting the assistant to contact emergency services is also important. Calling 911 only takes two seconds.

5. Manage your finances

Even though voice assistants have the capability to link to your financial applications, there are numerous security concerns associated with voice data. Clever cybercriminals have the ability to access your phone, take your voice, and exploit it to deplete your accounts. Simply access your bank’s website or mobile app and you’re good to go.

6. “Will I die if I eat this?”

When you’re out hiking and come across some berries, it’s best not to rely on voice assistants to determine if they are safe to eat. Conflicting information can be found online regarding toxic foods and plants, following which may result in a visit to the hospital.

7. “Get rid of this.”

Avoid requesting assistance from virtual assistants to erase your search history, uninstall applications, or delete photos. I’ve experienced a few incidents where a minor miscommunication resulted in the loss of something significant. Believe me, taking the extra minute to do it by hand is worth it.
