Storms hit Peninsula causing power outage for over 30,000 people

Severe storms swept through the Peninsula and Middle Peninsula, leaving over 30,000 Dominion Power customers without electricity on Friday evening.

At 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, there were around 5,000 Dominion customers who were still experiencing power outages in southeastern Virginia. Majority of these customers were from Hampton (1,555), Newport News (1,254), and York County (1,686). Meanwhile, on the Middle Peninsula, there were still over 1,600 Dominion customers without power, with the majority of them located in Gloucester County (1,428).

PulsePoint reported a significant number of downed trees and wires, along with several crashes in James City County. Hampton also had reports of downed wires, while Newport News experienced trees and wires down. York County had multiple reports of crashes as well.

As of 10 p.m. after the recent storms had swept through the region, the Dominion customers without power on the Peninsula and Middle Peninsula were reported in the following breakdown.

    • Isle of Wight County — 2,742 (3,241 at 9 p.m.)
    • Hampton — 3,197 (1,367 at 9 p.m.)
    • Williamsburg — 1,073 (909 at 9 p.m.)
    • Poquoson — 197 (197 at 9 p.m.)

Earlier on Friday evening, severe thunderstorms swept through parts of the Peninsula, unleashing wind gusts of more than 50 mph in some areas. The Historic Triangle and surrounding Peninsula areas were issued a severe thunderstorm warning as a result of this weather phenomenon.

As per the latest update from the Virginia Department of Transportation, drivers on Interstate 64 are experiencing delays due to inclement weather at mile marker 239.9 in York County. The east center lane, right lane, and right shoulder have been closed, causing backups that extend up to two miles as of 9:09 p.m. Motorists are advised to exercise caution while driving in this area and to expect delays until the situation is resolved.
