Transgender athletes and competitors have frequently encountered obstacles when it comes to participating in their chosen sports. Critics argue that they may have unfair advantages, and the Miss America competition is no exception to this debate.
Transgender athletes will be permitted to participate, with some limitations. In the 2025 season, it is required that individuals who are transgender have not undergone a full medical transition. The rule has become more stringent compared to before, when it permitted any entry that identified as “female”.
As per the San Francisco Standard, competitors are required to meet specific criteria related to their gender identity and medical certification.
The contract imposes additional limitations on transgender individuals, prohibiting them from marrying before or during their tenure as a titleholder. However, this provision is consistent with previous agreements.

Transgender individuals respond
The new conditions make it extremely difficult for trans individuals to participate in competitions unless they have undergone the costly and time-consuming process of transitioning from male to female.
Consequently, numerous individuals within the transgender community perceive this as a step backwards and have been vocal in expressing their viewpoints on the issue.
“It’s much more severe than I anticipated,” remarked Brian Nguyen, the 2023 winner of Miss Greater Derry (New Hampshire) and the first transgender individual to achieve this local victory.
However, Miss America owner and CEO, Robin Fleming, remains steadfast in her commitment to the new rules and emphasizes that they will not be changed.
They reassured those already competing by emphasizing that the new rules would not affect their current cycle, providing some peace of mind.
“This year, we’ve had the pleasure of witnessing the incredible talent of three female transgender contestants on our stages,” Fleming shared. “One of the contestants will be participating in the upcoming Miss California event next week, and there are no concerns about her eligibility.”
“Any future changes would have no effect on her eligibility or representation of her hometown for this year.”
